ANOTHER COMMUNITY CARE TRIP – SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Our most recent trip took us back to some patients and surgeries already helped and also to meet more new patients too.

Meeting up with a long term patient to replace her equipment. This lovely lady has been helped by NARA for many years, and her equipment was getting a bit tired. It was a pleasure to visit again and leave her with new equipment.

Placing a piece of equipment, especially a nebuliser is relatively easy, problems arise keeping it running. Many think once you have the equipment that’s the end, but no that’s just the beginning. In essence, all you are giving the patient is a pump, the nebuliser (medicine chamber) is what does all the work and this has to be looked after. These need daily cleaning to be able to give the medication freely and replacing at regular intervals along with other parts necessary to keep the pump in good running order.  We also have to ensure the equipment our patients have is appropriate to their condition, which can change over time for better or worse.

On to a surgery helped with equipment. These surgeries support many patients with breathing problems and it is a pleasure to be able to help. Loaning equipment into surgeries is a way of lowering waiting time for patients needing equipment and hopefully saving hospital beds.

Where a surgery is helped with equipment, again it’s pointless without the relevant nebuliser packs and support to go with it. These packs are for single patient use only, so adequate supplies have to be catered for.

From there we go to visit a new little boy. NARA helped this little one as a baby with a portable oxygen concentrator to enable his family to take him on holiday.  We had never met but communicated on our social media site and we (NARA) felt we had identified another need for this little man. It was a absolute pleasure to meet up with him and all his family and we hope our help in the futures meets his needs.

Most will know by now that we are looking to replace the MR10 apnoea alarm with a suitable piece of equipment. Last week we met with a lovely lady from a company we think may have a piece of equipment to cover that need, this machine not only covers babies but all ages, so that is a bonus and we are all very exited about this. The little boy above showed symptoms that this new machine can cover and hopefully help doctors be able to give his parents a diagnosis for his condition. We are thrilled to say we have been able to purchase one of these new machines for this little one which should be with him within the week.  This is a great stride forward for us as a charity, as the MR10’s were the reason we exists it was a great blow when we lost them. We hope this new equipment will be as good if not better, and will help us to continue helping babies and children with life threatening a complex conditions. We now need urgent funding to supply more of these. There is a waiting list!

To our last visit of the day and another surgery. A need had arisen for nebulisers to be placed into this surgery.  More equipment is still required when funds allow, as they cover such a large number of respiratory patients.

Please check out the rest of our website to see ‘what we do’, ‘who we help’ and how you can ‘donate’ to help others ‘to take a breath’. Thank you.
